Intel announced that the phase-out of the Core i7 940 with 2.93 GHz has already begun. The two other variants of the socket 1366 CPU - the Core i7 920 and 965 XE - are said to be not affected though.
The phase-out of the i7 940 is said to be carried out stepwise until September. According to a report at computerbase.de Intel justified the plans by saying that another processor will replace the Core i7 940. A possible candidate is the Core i7 950 which is clocked to 3.06 GHz and is expected to cost about as much as the 940.
A new Stepping for the Core i7 940 won't be introduced. But one can expect that the i7 950 will be released in the new D0 Stepping which has already been used for the Core i7 920.
